Gas prices fall heading into the weekend

Gas prices continue to drop heading into the weekend, with an average price of $3.471 per gallon for regular-grade gas on Friday.

This was cheaper than yesterday’s price of $3.487 per gallon, according to AAA. The average cost for a gallon of regular-grade gasoline in the country has dropped since shortly before the Memorial Day weekend. 

Three states now have an average gallon of regular-grade gasoline priced under $3. In Oklahoma, regular-grade gas costs $2.996 per gallon, and in Arkansas, it costs $2.991 per gallon. However, Mississippi remained the state with the cheapest gas in the nation on Thursday, coming in at $2.973 per gallon.

California remains the state with the most expensive gas in the country. However, after weeks of costing over $5 per gallon of regular gas, the state broke the $5 a gallon threshold for two days in a row, coming in at $4.96 on Friday. This is a decrease from yesterday’s price of $5.002 per gallon. A month ago, gas was $5.353 per gallon for regular-grade gas in the Golden State. 

Gas prices are less expensive than June 2023 when gas cost $3.553 a gallon. However, prices continue to vary significantly in each state. To see how expensive gas is in each state, click here.

Here are the gas prices for a gallon of regular-grade gas in and around Washington, D.C., and a few other states.

Washington, D.C.

On Friday, regular gas costs $3.688 per gallon in the nation’s capital, the same price as on Thursday. A week ago, the price for a gallon of regular-grade gas was $3.708. A month ago, it was $3.748 per gallon. Gas prices remain more expensive now than a year ago when a gallon cost $3.662.

Maryland

In Maryland, a gallon of regular-grade gas is $3.548 on Friday. This is a decrease from yesterday’s price of $3.572 per gallon. A week ago, gas cost $3.634 per gallon. A month ago, people in Maryland paid $3.655 per gallon for regular gas.

Virginia

The average price for a gallon of regular-grade gas in Virginia on Friday is $3.373. This is a decrease from yesterday’s average price of $3.387 per gallon. A month ago, regular-grade gas was $3.459 per gallon in Virginia. Gas prices remain more expensive in the state than last year when the cost of regular-grade gas was $3.309 per gallon.

Delaware

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Delaware on Friday is $3.436. This is slightly cheaper than Thursday’s gas price, which was $3.453 per gallon. A week ago, people in Delaware paid $3.508 per gallon for regular gas, while a month ago, gas was $3.58 per gallon.

Pennsylvania

A gallon of regular-grade gas in Pennsylvania on Friday cost $3.693. This was a decrease from Thursday’s price of $3.702. It was also a decrease from a week ago when regular gas was $3.746 per gallon. A month ago in Pennsylvania, gas cost $3.798 per gallon.

New Jersey

On Friday, gas prices in New Jersey stood at $3.443 for a gallon of regular-grade gasoline, which was cheaper than Thursday’s price of $3.452. A week ago, a gallon of regular cost $3.489, and a month ago, it was $3.612.

New York

Gas prices in New York are higher than the national average. A gallon of regular gas in the Empire State will cost $3.634 on Friday. This was cheaper than yesterday’s price of $3.640. A week ago, regular gas cost $3.664 per gallon. A month ago, it was $3.731 per gallon for regular.
