Drone attacks Russia’s Black Sea fleet headquarters

Russia’s Black Sea fleet headquarters in Crimea was hit by a drone carrying an explosive device on Sunday, according to Russian officials.

Six people were wounded, and ceremonies honoring Russia’s navy were canceled after the explosion in the courtyard of the naval fleet’s headquarters in Sevastopol, according to authorities.

“Early this morning, Ukrainian nationalists moved to spoil our Navy Day celebrations. An unidentified object came flying into the courtyard of the [Black Sea] Fleet’s headquarters. According to preliminary information, it was an unmanned aerial vehicle. Five of the headquarters employees were injured, there are no fatalities. All of the injured have received medical assistance,” Crimean Gov. Mikhail Razvozhayev wrote on Telegram on Sunday.

Ukrainian officials have not claimed responsibility for the drone explosion.

Olga Kovitidi, a Russian lawmaker from Crimea, told Russian state media on Sunday that the drone was launched from the city of Sevastopol, and the incident is being treated as a terrorist act.

The terrorism threat level in Crimea has been raised to its second-highest level, “yellow,” as a result of the attack, the Associated Press reported.

Crimea was seized by Russian forces during Russia’s 2014 military campaign in Ukraine.
