A crowd of 46 mommas with full heads of hair gathered on a stage in the middle of Union Station Wednesday night. The purpose? To shave it all off in honor of their children, all of whom are currently battle cancer or are cancer survivors.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation event, 46 Mommas: Shave for the Brave, aimed to raise awareness and funds for the 46 children diagnosed with cancer every weekday. Seventeen of the women had lost a child to cancer.
WRC NBC4’s new weekend anchor Angie Goff hosted the event and convinced Bob Madigan, WTOP Radio’s Man About Town, to join the ranks of the mommas and have his head shaved at the end of the night. “Meeting these mommas and hearing their stories of their children’s cancer battles was heart wrenching. I felt compelled to show my compassion beyond just a radio piece,” Madigan told Yeas & Nays. “If we don’t take care of the next generation, they won’t be able to take care of us,” he added.
Also on hand to help with the buzz, former “Real Houswife of D.C.” Mary Amons, who helped shave the head of Ginette Lamberti-Lacchini, a mother from Staten Island whose 7-year-old son is currently cancer-free after a years-long fight with Neuroblastoma.
“I was actually nervous because it was so emotional,” Amons who used to cut hair years ago said while holding her high heels in her hand. (She felt they made her too tall to shave Lamberti-Lacchini’s head, who was seated in front of her.) “With that first wave, I really thought about all this woman has gone through with childhood cancer. I’ve been blessed with five healthy children, and I was really humbled to give back to moms who have been affected by cancer,” she said.
