MSNBC’s Jose Diaz-Balart is none too impressed with Hillary Clinton’s call for a constitutional amendment to get money out of politics, with the cable news host calling her suggestion Thursday a bit “ironic.”
Clinton has long been noted for her personal wealth and connections to Wall Street.
Diaz-Balart said Thursday that the former first lady, who announced Sunday that she is running for president in 2016, is positioning herself as an opponent of money in politics while her team reportedly plans to raise $2.5 billion for her campaign.
“Yeah, you know its kind of ironic that the people talking about campaign finance reform are talking about maybe doing $2 billion worth of campaigning from now to November 2016,” Diaz-Balart said. “They are saying Clinton could do $2 billion!”
The MSNBC anchor is not alone in his criticism for Clinton’s newly announced candidacy. A handful of notable left-wing commentators, including Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus and MSNBC’s Rachael Maddow, have also accuse the former secretary of state and U.S. senator of lacking the common touch.
“The more I watch Hillary Clinton’s announcement video, the less I like it. This may be putting it mildly,” Marcus said on the former first lady’s “insultingly vapid” campaign launch video. “Might I suggest, candidate Clinton? The best way to demonstrate your humility to voters is to take them and their presidential choice seriously, not to pander and condescend.”
Maddow dinged Clinton’s announced platform, which includes an “economy for tomorrow” and keeping “our country safe,” saying that just about anybody could have come up with those positions.
