People identifying as Dems, GOP drops in 2015

The portion of people who identify themselves as “Democrat” or “Republican” are both near historic lows, according to a new survey.

Roughly 29 percent of respondents identified as Democrats over the course of 2015, marking the lowest point since that same level was hit in 1998, according to a new Gallup survey.

Twenty-six percent identified themselves as members of the Republican Party in 2015, just one point above the party’s all-time low of 25 percent in 2014.

Overall, 42 percent in 2015 identified as independents, a slight drop from the 43 percent who identified as such in 2014.

Though 16 percent of independents said they leaned toward the Democratic Party, and another 16 percent said they lean Republican, the Democrats still had an advantage over Republicans in the overall poll, 45 percent to 42 percent.

The landline and telephone survey of roughly 12,100 U.S. adults was conducted throughout the course of 2015, carrying a margin of error of plus or minus 1 percentage point.
