The mayor of a small town married an alligator in a traditional ceremony, as residents danced and implored him to kiss his bride.
Mayor Victor Hugo Sosa of San Pedro Huamelula, a small town in Mexico, kissed the alligator on the snout, which was tied closed, several times, according to a report.
Marriage to an alligator is a centuries-old tradition that acts as a prayer for nature’s bounty in the Chontal and Huave indigenous communities of the Oaxaca state.

“We ask nature for enough rain, for enough food, that we have fish in the river,” Sosa said.
The ceremony has been updated with a mix of Catholic themes, as the alligator was dressed in a white wedding dress and accompanying colorful garments, the report noted.
The 7-year-old gator was referred to as “Little Princess.”
She is believed to be a representation of Mother Earth, and her marriage to the mayor represents a combination of man and the divine.
“It gives me so much happiness and makes me proud of my roots,” the godmother who organized the ceremony said.
