Gabby Giffords lands People cover

Rep Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., has landed the cover of this week’s People magazine and opens up about her remarkable recovery after being shot in the head outside a grocery store in Tucson, Ariz., in January. In the cover story, the 41-year-old insists that she will return to Congress and that she is getting stronger. Giffords and her husband, Mark Kelly, highlight excerpts from their new book, “Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope,” which reveal the couples’ efforts to try to have a child and Giffords’ emotional battle to learn to speak again.

Kelly tells People he remembers when his wife tried to speak again and was unable to get the words out. “She was hyperventilating, absolutely panicked. Gabby motioned with her left hand, waving it by her mouth. It didn’t take me long to figure out what was wrong,” he said.

The book is out on Tuesday. The magazine is on newsstands now.
