Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton was booked Monday on three felony charges.
Paxton, who turned himself in at a Dallas-area jail, was booked on two first-degree felonies for securities fraud and a third-degree felony for failing to register with the state to sell securities. His mugshot was released shortly after.
Paxton, who assumed his position on January 1, joins former Texas Gov. Rick Perry as the second prominent Texas official to be indicted within the past year.
According to WFAA, he is accused of defrauding two individuals of more than $100,000 from his time prior to becoming attorney general. Though he does not have to resign while fighting the charges, should he be convicted, he would lose his law license and have to step down.
During his time as Texas’s top lawyer, he has led a well-known challenge against President Obama’s executive order on immigration, as well as a recent case involving abortion clinics in the state.
A Tarrant Country judge has been appointed to preside over the case, though a trial is likely more than a year away.
