Congressional approval has rarely been so low with two months to go before midterm elections.
Just 14 percent of Americans approve how Congress is handling its job, according to a new Gallup poll. The rating is the second lowest one measured before a fall midterm election since 1974.
In September 2010, congressional approval was 18 percent, one factor that led to Republicans taking control of the House. But the low approval this time may hurt Democrats, pollsters said.
“Americans indicate that these negative attitudes will increase their probability of voting this fall, and history suggests it is more likely that Democrats than Republicans will suffer as a result, given Democratic control of the White House,” Gallup wrote.
The telephone poll, conducted from Sept. 4-7, surveyed 1,017 adults 18 years and over and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
