Harry Reid to undergo eye surgery

Sen. Minority Leader Harry Reid will undergo eye surgery to restore the vision in his right eye, which was damaged in a New Year’s Day gym mishap.

Reid spokeswoman Kristen Orthman said the Nevada Democrat was told Monday by his doctor that an operation is necessary “to assist in recovering full vision in his right eye.” The procedure will take place at George Washington University Hospital in D.C.

Reid, Orthman said, is expected to be released from the hospital “quickly” following the operation but doctors have ordered him to work from home next week to minimize strain in his eye. He broke facial bones and ribs in the accident, which occurred when an exercise band he was using snapped backwards, hitting him.

The senator came to the Senate on Tuesday for the first time this year, after working from home. He left before President Obama’s State of the Union address.

Reid will be back in the Senate on Thursday, Orthman said.
