The cast of “Saturday Night Live” poked fun at the air of inevitability surrounding Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, which she is expected to formally announce via social media Sunday.
“Citizens, you will elect me,” Kate McKinnon, playing the former first lady, deadpanned during the show’s “cold open” sketch Saturday. “I will be your leader.”
The skit featured a stilted Hillary Clinton attempting to film her campaign announcement video with the help of a frazzled staffer.
Hillary Clinton will reportedly release a video Sunday after announcing her campaign on Twitter.
Darrell Hammond, a former “Saturday Night Live” cast member whose Bill Clinton impersonation is among his most memorable, also appeared in the sketch, reprising his role as the former president. (Hammond is currently the show’s announcer, having replaced the late Don Pardo.)
“Hillary would make a great president. And I would make an even greater ‘first dude,’ ” Hammond’s Bill Clinton said before alluding to the scandals from his own two terms in the White House.
“Aren’t we such a fun, approachable dynasty?” McKinnon’s Hillary quipped during the skit.
Democratic insiders have hinted Sunday’s long-anticipated launch will also include an email blast to supporters.
“Saturday Night Live” parodies often feature prominently in presidential campaigns.
Tina Fey’s popular Sarah Palin impression fueled criticism of the former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate in the 2008 election, and Jay Pharoah’s Barack Obama spoofs often make light of the president’s policies.
