PBS host Gwen Ifill had already heard an earful about her seemingly-critical tweet about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Wednesday. And then Chris Christie chimed in.
Ifill had pointed out a graphic cited by the State Department in defense of the Iran deal with the comment “take that, Bibi” on Twitter. Christie would have none if it.
“Gwen Ifill should be ashamed of herself. ‘Take that, Bibi’ — what did she mean? That wasn’t a shot at the prime minister?” Christie asked. “Of course it was a shot at the prime minister.”
“This is the woman who moderated a vice presidential debate while she was in the midst of marketing a book on what she assumed to be the Obama presidency,” Christie said. “So we’re certainly not pretending that Gwen Ifill is some type of independent journalist here.”
“The fact is that she’s an Obama apologist,” Christie continued. “That’s fine. She’s put that out there and has been criticized for it, as well she should be.”
The New Jersey governor went on to wonder if the PBS “NewsHour” host is also supportive of Hassan Rouhani, the president of Iran, before saying “who cares who Gwen Ifill is for.”
Ifill argued her comment had been mischaracterized.
“I was [retweeting] a @TheIranDeal tweet,” Ifill tweeted. “Should have been clearer that it was their argument, not mine.”
The tweet Ifill referred to reads, “With the #IranDeal, Iran’s program is significantly less dangerous,” while including a chart with an illustration of a bomb, similar to one used at the United Nations in 2012 by Netanyahu himself.
