Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s campaign accused Ted Cruz of being the new “establishment candidate” in the GOP field, after Mitt Romney said he would vote for Cruz in Tuesday’s caucuses in Utah.
John Weaver, who serves as Kasich’s chief strategist, tweeted that Cruz is now assuming the establishment mantle. The tweet came after Romney’s announcement and as some within the Republican Party, including Sen. Lindsey Graham, have begun to rush to Cruz’s aid in an effort to defeat Donald Trump.
“Good to know Ted Cruz is the establishment, K-Street backed candidate,” Weaver tweeted, adding in the hashtag “#HelloStatusQuo.”

Weaver retweeted multiple accounts spreading a similar message, including one tweet saying that it’s hard to be more establishment than a U.S. senator who graduated from Princeton and Harvard Law School.
Earlier in the day, Kasich cited the Republican National Convention as his best chance to win the GOP nomination, with his path to winning the nod before hand has become nearly impossible given delegate math.
