House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has invited former Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole to be one of two guests she has invited to view President Obama’s final State of the Union address.
Dole, who represented North Carolina in the Senate and once ran for the Republican presidential nomination, is founder and CEO of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, which Pelosi noted in a statement, “has raised the crisis facing America’s military and veteran caregivers to a national level.”
Pelosi, D-Calif., identified herself as an early supporter of Dole’s foundation, which in 2016 will launch the “Hidden Heroes Campaign,” chaired by actor Tom Hanks. According to the Dole Foundation, the campaign’s goal is “to raise $10 million to better serve and support military and veteran caregivers across the country.”
A Pelosi aide did not signal whether former Sen. Bob Dole, R-Kansas, would be joining Mrs. Dole in the House chamber viewing gallery.
Bob Dole is a constant presence at the World War II memorial in Washington D.C., where he greets veterans and visitors who line up to talk with him and take pictures.
Pelosi has also invited husband Paul Pelosi to see the speech.
