Josh Earnest and the Saturday Night Live cast member who wasn’t

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest was asked Friday to name his all-time favorite Saturday Night Live cast member, to which he responded: “Steve Martin.”

Only problem is: Steve Martin was never a cast member on Saturday Night Live.

“I think you have to go with Steve Martin, right?” Earnest said Friday after he was asked by the hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” to name his favorite Saturday Night Live cast member of all time, adding Martin “really sort of pioneered a lot of the public figures on that show.”

The question came in reference to a recent Rolling Stone article ranking all 141 cast members from the popular NBC sketch comedy show.

However, as MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough was quick to point out Friday morning, Steve Martin was never a full cast member of the show.

Martin, 69, is best known for his work in standup comedy as well as his roles in several popular comedies, including “My Blue Heaven,” “The Jerk” and the 1991 remake of the Spencer Tracey classic “Father of the Bride.”

And although Martin has appeared frequently on Saturday Night Live throughout the years, he has never worked as a full-time member of the popular comedy show’s cast.

He has appeared as only a guest and, later, as a host.

But, as mentioned by the hosts of “Morning Joe,” Martin’s Saturday Night Live appearances have been so numerous and so memorable, that the silver-haired comedian has by now earned the title of “honorary cast member.”
