Texas Ebola patient is dead

Dallas Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan his died, Texas health officials reported Wednesday.

Duncan arrived from Liberia last week. He was at first sent home from a Texas emergency room after complaining of a fever and feeling sick. He later returned in an ambulance and was put in isolation.

Officials are monitoring people who had come in contact with Duncan and so far none have shown symptoms of the disease.

Here is the statement announcing Duncan’s death from Texas Health Resources, which manages the hospital system that treated Duncan:

“It is with profound sadness and heartfelt disappointment that we must inform you of the death of Thomas Eric Duncan this morning at 7:51 am. Mr. Duncan succumbed to an insidious disease, Ebola. He fought courageously in this battle. Our professionals, the doctors and nurses in the unit, as well as the entire Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas community, are also grieving his passing. We have offered the family our support and condolences at this difficult time.”
