Obama jokes: ‘We know it’s Black History Month when …’

President Obama joked on Thursday that it’s easy to tell when it’s Black History Month because everyone starts commenting on his wife.

“We know it is Black History Month when you hear somebody say, ‘Haay Michelle! Girl, you look so good!'” Obama remarked at a White House reception.

First lady Michelle Obama kept the jokes going, and added,”He’s all right. You look good too, baby.”

The crowd clearly enjoyed it.

Prior to the reception, Obama met with more than a dozen civil rights leaders, including Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., Rev. Al Sharpton, and Brittany Packnett, a Ferguson, Mo., activist and a member of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing.

During the Black History Month reception, Obama commented that young people are carrying the torch from generations past.

“What’s so inspiring about these young people and their generation is that they don’t see black history as a relic; it’s not something to study in a book,” Obama said. “They don’t see themselves as distant from that history — they are participants, making history. It’s alive, something that we have the power and the responsibility to shape and to wield.”
