A year before the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton would tie Ben Carson, according to a new poll.

Clinton leads businessman Donald Trump by eight points (50-42) former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush by four points (47-43) and only leads Florida Sen. Marco Rubio by three points (47-44). But when matched against Carson, the race becomes unclear with both candidates coming in at 47 percent of the vote each, according to the Wall Street Journal/NBC poll released on Tuesday.

Overall, Clinton does worse than GOP candidates among independent voters. Carson does best among independents, leading the former secretary of state 47-35, a likely reason for his solid performance in a hypothetical matchup.

Rubio has a seven-point lead among independents (42-35), Bush has a four-point lead (41-37), and Trump has a four-point lead as well (43-39).

The poll also tested Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders against the GOP. He did better than Clinton when matched against Trump and Rubio by a small margin. Sanders leads Trump 50-41 and pulls ahead of Rubio 46-41. The poll was conducted among 847 registered voters and has a margin or error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
