Trump, Univision settle Miss Universe lawsuit

Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump and Univision have privately settled a lawsuit dating back to June 2015, when the Spanish-language television network canceled its telecast of the annual Miss USA and Miss Universe pageant and severed ties with the Trump Organization due to the billionaire’s controversial comments about unlawful Mexican immigrants.

Trump, a savvy New York business mogul who partially owned the two beauty pageants, immediately went after the network for $500 million.

“I’m going to have to sue Univision now. They have a signed contract,” he told Fox News at the time. “They’ll have to pay me a lot of money.

A statement released Thursday by Univision said both parties were “pleased to announce that they have settled their litigation arising from Univision’s decision not to broadcast the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants.” The network did not offer specifics related to the terms of the settlement.

“I have known Univision’s President and CEO, Randy Falco, for more than 20 years and I’m glad we are able to put these differences behind us,” Trump said in a statement. Falco responded in similar fashion, acknowledging he was “pleased to settle this matter and move forward.”

The settlement comes five months after Trump sold the Miss Universe Organization, which was valued between $5 million and $25 million, to the Beverly Hills talent agency WME-IM in a transaction in which the sum was never made public.
