Esquire names Best & Worst pols

Hacks and heroes

For the first time in its 75 year history, Esquire magazine has endorsed a presidential candidate — Barack Obama.

But the endorsement isn’t the only opinionated politics in its November issue; Esquire has also ranked the 10 Best & Worst politicians.

Not surprisingly, the “Worst” list sees such legally-troubled pols as Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. William Jefferson. But Rep. Michelle Bachmann (“…equal parts religious hack and party hack…”), Sen. Joe Lieberman (“this small man…has pursued his campaign of revenge against his former party…”) and Rep. Joe Baca (“corrupt and venal…”) also made the cut.

Among Esquire’s “Best” pols are Rep. Mike Pence (“one of the most principled members…”), Re. Jeff Flake (“…as rare as the dodo… Republicans should learn from him…”), Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (“Few things in Washington have been as satisfying during the past two years…”), and Sen. Lamar Alexander (“…the rare man who follows his own compass”).
