Zoo critters react to quake

Iris [an orangutan] began ‘belch vocalizing’ — an unhappy/upset noise normally reserved for extreme irritation — before the quake and continued this vocalization following the quake.” – A National Zoo update on its residents’ reactions to Tuesday’s earthquake. The zoo also noted that snakes began writhing during the quake, which was unusual since they are normally still, and a giant elephant shrew hid in his habitat and refused to come out for his afternoon feeding.
