GOP is hot for ‘South Park’

Tops on the boob tube

When commentators like Andrew Sullivan and Brian C. Anderson earlier this decade coined the term “South Park Republicans,” to describe GOPers that appreciated the raunchy cartoon’s libertarian/common-sense worldview, they must have been onto something.

The show that takes pride in cracking crude jokes at the expense of Michael Jackson, Mel Gibson and Terri Schiavo, just to name a few, is the program that “engages” Republicans the most, according to new research.

A new study by the Nielsen Company tracks how “engaged” people are when watching certain television programs and “South Park” ranked No. 1 for Republicans, while Democrats were most glued to the set for “The Colbert Report.”

The No. 2 choice for those rich Republicans? Discovery Channel’s “Cash Cab,” a more fitting choice for the party that was once pegged as the province of country club elitists. The No. 2 choice of Democrats also seems fitting, given their environmental bent: Discovery’s “Deadliest Catch.”
