Seeing the planes up close

Many of the World War II bombers and fighters participating in the Washington flyover on Friday will be available for touring or rides over the weekend.

• Rides at Manassas Regional Airport, May 9-13:

B-29 Superfortress, B-24 Liberator, B-17 Flying Fortress, P-51 Mustang, SB2C Hell Diver, C-45 Expeditor.

• Viewing aircraft at Culpeper Regional Airport, Brandy Station, Va.

A-26 Invader, P-47 Thunderbolt, P-39 Airacobra, B-25 Mitchell and dozens more take off from Culpeper Regional Airport May 8 for the flyover, and return there after. Due to security, tours will not be available ahead of time.

• Tours May 9 at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center:

A collection of the aircraft participating in the flyover will perform a “fly in” to the Chantilly museum Saturday for a family day.
