WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has scheduled a vote for Friday on a temporary spending bill required to prevent a government shutdown.
The chamber will also vote on a Tea Party-backed provision to defund Obamacare, but only if it defeats a filibuster by Sen. Ted Cruz and others. They’re filibustering the bill because a vote to end debate gives Democrats controlling the chamber a big procedural edge.
But many Republicans are poised to break with Cruz since the alternative is to kill the bill altogether and force a partial government shutdown at midnight on Monday.
