CBS’ Schieffer: GOP ‘replaced by something new’ post-2016

Veteran newsman Bob Schieffer, former anchor of CBS’ “Face the Nation,” is convinced that after the 2016 election, the Republican Party will be no more.

In an interview posted online Monday, Schieffer said the dynamic of the GOP has been flipped by the current front-runner for the nomination, Donald Trump.

“On the Republican side what we’re seeing here is a changing of the guard,” Schieffer said. “If Trump wins the nomination before the convention, and it looks like he probably will, it will turn the Republican party on its ear. If it goes to an open convention, it will be a bloody fight that could break the party into two parties. In either case, the Republican party we used to know will be replaced by something new.”

Trump, who has never held office, is under fire not only from Democrats but also a large portion of the Republicans in Washington, D.C., which sees him as insufficiently conservative and lacking in necessary experience to be president.

Though Trump is best positioned now to win the nomination, his three other GOP rivals are still in the race, potentially depriving him of a majority of delegates.

Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and John Kasich all appear to be angling for a brokered convention in July, wherein all of the candidates may continue competing for delegates to emerge as the nominee.
