Ann Romney: Trump ‘a good thing’ for 2016

If nothing else, Donald Trump has brought a lot of eyeballs to the 2016 race, and Ann Romney thinks that’s a positive.

During an interview with Yahoo! News Tuesday, Romney argued that Trump’s presence in the 2016 contest has been “a good thing” overall for presidential politics. Romney also told host Katie Couric that she does not have a horse in the race, echoing past statements by Mitt Romney about the couple’s neutrality in the race.

Trump currently tops the Washington Examiner’s latest power rankings.

“I think certainly — every cycle is so unique, and this one is maybe one of the most unique,” Romney told Couric. “More people are listening. I think more people are becoming getting engaged. More people are paying attention than ever before. Maybe, is that — that, I would say, would be a good thing.”

Romney also expressed a sense of relief that her husband did not try to give it a third run at the White House, making it clear that they are enjoying this race from the sidelines.

“Not a second,” Romney said when asked if they missed the campaign trail. “Not a second. I think it’s almost every day Mitt and I go, ‘oh, aren’t we glad we’re having our life back, and we’re doing what we want to do and we’re enjoying it.'”

“Now, it’s not to say we’re not enjoying it like everyone else is,” Romney continued. “It’s quite entertaining. It’s totally different than any of us would have anticipated, and I would have to say that’s the case on both sides of the aisle.”

When asked if she had a favorite in the race, Romney said that it’s not her place to offer up an opinion, as the Romney’s get along well with many in the race, adding further that her 2016 favorite decided not to enter the race.

“It’s Mitt, and he’s not running!” Romney said laughing.
