New Hampshire Senate candidate Scott Brown avoided answering questions on women’s issues and contraception.
The Republican has already been accused by his opponent, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, of not standing up for women’s reproductive rights, a common refrain among Democrats this year.
But rather than try to defuse the topic, as some Republicans have, Brown changed the subject.
“Well unfortunately, I’m talking about issues that people care about,” Brown said to Fox Host Gretchen Carlson’s when asked about Shaheen’s criticism.
Though he did say he supports contraception and equal pay — “women’s issues are very important” — he emphasized that he is “focusing on the things that people care about,” such as “border security, veterans issues, [and] where we stand when it comes to Obamacare.”
It was consistent with past interviews.
“I’ll leave that to the political pundits,” Brown said in an interview with New Hampshire Public Radio last month when asked if he thinks the gender wage gap persists.
A RealClearPolitics average of polls has Shaheen ahead of Brown by four points
