Hillary headlines ‘Saturday Night Live,’ not gay rights dinner

One week before the first Democratic primary debate, Hillary Clinton will appear on “Saturday Night Live” rather than headlining a major gay rights organization’s dinner.

Clinton, who has appeared on and been ridiculed by “Saturday Night Live” multiple times in the past will use the opportunity to shed some humor of her brewing email scandal and connect with voters as she faces her first significant challenges of the primary campaign.

The Clinton campaign has been attempting to showcase Clinton’s humor and personable nature after many complained that she seemed cold and out of touch on the campaign trail. During the month of September alone, Clinton danced with Ellen DeGeneres, joked with Jimmy Fallon and giggled with Lena Dunham — all in order to seem more open and friendly.

Saturday’s “SNL” appearance was meant to be top secret according to the New York Times. Clinton will appear alongside Kate McKinnon, who portrays the former secretary of state and first lady on the show.

The Human Rights Campaign will also be having its annual dinner Saturday night. Clinton will address the group’s board of directors that morning. Vice President Joe Biden, a potential Clinton challenger, will headline that event. Biden was the organization’s third choice for the keynote after Clinton and President Barack Obama. The Human Rights Campaign did not respond to the Washington Examiner‘s request for comment.

Clinton has been a vocal supporter of LGBT rights since launching her campaign in April. But recently released emails from her private server show that she balked at the State Department’s switch to LGBT friendly terminology on passports in 2011, demanding that “mother” and “father” be the preferred terms for describing parents.

Miley Cyrus will be the musical guest on the “Saturday Night Live” episode. She will likely appear with Clinton.
