The head of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization on Wednesday denounced North Korea’s reported test of a nuclear weapon.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stotlenberg accused North Korea of endangering global security, and called on North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons and missile programs.
“The nuclear weapons test announced by North Korea undermines regional and international security, and is in clear breach of UN Security Council resolutions,” Stoltenberg said in a statement.
“I condemn the continued development by North Korea of nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs and its inflammatory and threatening rhetoric,” he added.
Late Tuesday night, the communist nation announced it had successfully carried out a hydrogen bomb test. The seismic activity near a North Korean nuclear site was first believed to be an earthquake.
North Korea’s neighbors, including South Korea, Russia and Japan, have all come out against the nuclear test, according to the New York Times.
Even China, the sole major ally of North Korea, did not hide its displeasure Wednesday.
“Today, despite the opposition of the international community, North Korea carried out a nuclear test,” Hua Chunying, a spokeswoman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a news conference in Beijing. “China is strongly against this act.”
