Michelle Obama to edit women’s magazine

Women’s feature magazines have never been a paradigm of journalistic independence, but More magazine has officially shredded any pretext of objectivity towards the White House by inviting first lady Michelle Obama to guest edit its upcoming July/August issue.

More, which bills itself as a magazine “for women of style and substance,” invited the first lady to showcase her pet causes and “significant contributions” during her six years at the White House.

“I am excited and honored to be guest editor of More this month and tell you a little bit about the issues I’m working on, as well as the extraordinary Americans I’ve had the privilege of meeting as first lady,” Obama said in a press release about the upcoming issue, which hits newsstands June 23.

More described the first lady’s guest edit as an “unprecedented collaboration” inspired by the “significant contributions” she has made over the past six year, and will highlight four of her major initiatives.

Those programs include: Let’s Move, a program focusing on kids eating healthier and leading more active lives; Reach Higher, which encourages young people to seek higher education goals past high school; Joining Forces, which works to support and honor our services members, veterans and their families; and Let Girls Learn, an effort to help girls around the world go to school and stay in school.

“The first lady is the ultimate More woman,” says Lesley Jane Seymour, the magazine’s editor-in-chief. “She is the perfect combination of passion, intelligence, beauty and glamour, and her gift for moving people to action is the reason I invited her to be our first-ever guest editor.”

“After reading the issue, I hope our readers will be moved to make a difference of their own,” said Seymour.
