The Spanish-language U.S. news organization Univision published an open letter to Republican nominee Donald Trump on Tuesday, urging him to tone down his criticisms of the news media.
Univision said that it stands “foursquare” with the Washington Post, which Trump said this week would be denied credentials to cover his campaign rallies.
“Your action is unprecedented and dangerous,” the letter said. “In the United States, mainstream press organizations are always granted access to presidential candidates events. Never before have so many of them been denied this access.”
Trump has made a semi-regular show of blocking specific reporters and news organizations from attending his campaign rallies, even as he continues to frequently appear for interviews on national TV and in other publications that he, for one reason or another, deems more fair to him.
“Based on the incredibly inaccurate coverage and reporting of the record setting Trump campaign, we are hereby revoking the press credentials of the phony and dishonest Washington Post,” Trump said Monday on Facebook.
At issue was a Post headline that suggested Trump, in an interview on Fox News that morning, had accused President Obama of being involved in the mass shooting in Orlando, Fla.
Trump had said that Obama may have “something else in mind” regarding terrorism in the U.S. but he did not elaborate.
