Joe Manchin (D-WV) remained neutral when asked Sunday whether he hopes Democrats keep control of Congress after the 2022 midterm elections.
Manchin, a centrist senator who sometimes frustrates his Democratic colleagues by opposing legislation favored by the liberal wing of the party, instead touted his ability to work with members across the aisle.

“I’m not making those choices or decisions on that. I’m going to work with whatever I have. I’ve always said that. I think the Democrats have great candidates that are running. They’re good people I’ve worked with. And I have a tremendous amount of respect and friendship with my Republican colleagues. So I can work on either side very easily,” Manchin told NBC’s Chuck Todd on Meet the Press.
Manchin has long disparaged what he deems “partisan gamesmanship,” arguing that he will work with whoever is elected in November.
“Whatever the voters choose. I can’t decide what’s going to happen in Kansas or California or Texas,” Manchin added. “I respect the state for the people they send, and I give it my best to work with them, to do the best for my country. I don’t play the politics that way.”
Manchin is in the process of going for a “full Ginsberg,” appearing on all five major Sunday morning talk shows today. Manchin has scheduled appearances on CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox.

Manchin’s television time is largely centered on a deal he announced Wednesday with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on alternate legislation to Build Back Better called the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.
Manchin, who opposed Build Back Better, saying its $2.4 trillion price tag was too high, has argued the reconciliation bill will get our “economic and financial house in order.”
