Ben Affleck gives ‘Batman’ costar a shout out during congressional testimony

Capitol Hill got really Hollywood Thursday.

Actor and director Ben Affleck delivered testimony at a Senate hearing on diplomacy and national security — with his wife, actress Jennifer Garner, visibly in tow — during which he gave a shout out to Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) for his role in the upcoming Batman film.

“To Sen. Leahy, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge my costar in ‘Batman,'” Affleck, who will star in the film, said at the beginning of his remarks. “The role is marginally smaller than mine but I understand you’re quite good.”

In fact, Leahy has appeared in both “The Dark Knight” and “The Dark Knight Rises,” albeit in very minor roles. He is set to appear in “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” which will be released in 2016.

Affleck appeared at the hearing to represent the Eastern Congo Initiative, an advocacy and grant-making initiative he founded to work with the people of eastern Congo.

Affleck, who was flanked by Bill Gates, also praised the chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee for State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs Lindsey Graham at the start of his testimony.

Specifically, the actor commended the Republican senator for leading the “largest ever delegation” of U.S. senators to eastern Congo in August 2013.

Leahy is the ranking member of the subcommittee.
