Even though there are still unanswered questions about the Internal Revenue Service targeting, one Democratic Congressman is claiming that the case is “solved.”
Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), the ranking member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, appeared on CNN‘s ‘State of the Union‘ Sunday morning to speak about the IRS scandal. He told host Candy Crowley that it’s time to be done with the investigation.
“Based upon everything I’ve seen the case is solved,” he said. “And if it were me, I would wrap this case up and move on, to be frank with you.”
The Congressman pointed out that the Inspector General made some recommendations that are now being adopted by the IRS. He added that new IRS Acting Commissioner Daniel Werfel was “doing a great job.”
“I think we’re in great shape,” he finished.
Cummings also called for Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) to release the full transcripts of interviews with IRS employees in Cincinnati. He said he would be glad to appear on ‘State of the Union‘ again next week — with Issa — to release the records.
But the Maryland Congressman also said he would release the transcripts himself if Issa has not done so by next week.
“I want every syllable of those transcripts to be released,” he said.
During an appearance on CBS‘ ‘Face the Nation,’ Cummings also responded to Issa’s accusations that the White House was lying about the IRS scandal.
“Well, Chairman Issa has a tendency to make strong allegations and then go chasing the facts and usually never finding them,” Cummings said.
Host Bob Schieffer then asked if Cummings was calling Issa a liar. The Congressman responded that he would not say that, calling those words “inappropriate.” But he stressed that Issa was making “wild accusations.”
“And I can tell you that in this case Chairman Issa, with all due respect, is absolutely wrong,” Cummings added.
