President Obama gets a bad grade on education policies

If leading the country was a class in school, President Obama would probably be failing.

In addition to his dismal approval ratings on health care, foreign policy and the economy, Obama is also getting poor grades from Americans on his education policies.

Specifically, a whopping 27 percent of Americans give Obama a failing grade for “his performance in support of public schools,” according to a PDK/Gallup Poll released Wednesday.

Only 5 percent of respondents said they give Obama an A grade on education, whereas 22 percent awarded him a B, 29 percent a C, and 16 percent a D. That means that an overwhelming majority — 72 percent — puts Obama in the C-D-F range for his ineffective education policy.

What’s more, Americans are so dissatisfied with Obama’s actions on education that a majority of 56 percent of respondents agreed that local school boards should be the principal influence on what public schools are teaching. Only 15 percent said that the federal government should wield such power.

Even Democrats want the federal government to stay out of the country’s public schools. Forty-five percent of Democratic respondents said local school boards should have the most influence, while only 28 percent replied that the federal government should play the major role.

Among Obama’s federal education policies is Race to the Top, an initiative that attempts to incentivize states to enact school reform and align policies and standards across the country.

Obama’s administration has also demonstrated its support of Common Core, a program that helps the government set education standards. According to a recent study, public support for the Common Core standards is faltering.

The PDK/Gallup poll surveyed 1,001 Americans during the months of May and June of this year.
