Dog has emergency surgery after eating owner’s school science project

This canine has quite the appetite for science.

A dog belonging to a family in Colorado ate his young owner Payton’s class science project – a mock volcano – and ended up in emergency surgery, reports CBS Denver.

“I made a volcano project out of candy and I pinned the candy to a foam base,” the girl, Payton, told the station. “It was Mt. Haleakala in Maui.”

According to the young student, she awoke one morning to find the project destroyed, with pieces of the project littered all over the floor.

“I was very scared,” she added.

The dog, Reggie, needed emergency surgery after ingesting the pins from the project. An abdominal X-ray revealed 50 straight pins inside of Reggie. Though some of the pins were removed using an endoscope down the dog’s throat, surgery was needed to remove the remaining pieces of the project.

Veterinarian Dr. Brian VanVechten explained the procedure: “We went in surgically, pulled out the one large and four of the small straight pins.”

Following the surgery, Payton said that Reggie is “absolutely normal.” Payton was also able to re-do the project and received an A on it.

This time, however, she used glue instead of pins.
