Even New York Yankees fans agree it’s too soon to heckle Boston Red Sox fans with “Boston Massacre” t-shirts.
Nike Inc. pulled its “Boston Massacre” T-shirts from its shelves over the weekend in light of the deadly Boston Marathon bombings last Monday. The navy shirts, which were marketed to Yankees fans as an ode to their series sweeps of the Red Sox in 1978 and 2006, had fake blood splattered all over the words “Boston Massacre.”
Playing off of Britain’s attack on Boston in 1770, diehard Yankees fans deemed these huge wins the “Boston Massacre.” While the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry can be vicious at times, these t-shirts were designed long before last week’s deadly bombings.
“We conducted this process as quickly as possible and are confident the product has been removed from distribution,” Nike spokeswoman Mary Remuzzi told The Associated Press.
