A group of American college students partied in Cancun, Mexico for spring break, and didn’t win over any friends with our neighbors to the south.
The Yucatan Times, on March 13th, slammed the group of Americans for chanting “Build the Wall.” They were apparently disturbing Mexican hotel workers and other visiting tourists.
“Today I was with Suly, my wife (who is a native of Mexico), watching an entertainment show off the coast of Cancun aboard a boat, and at the end of the show, a flock of Americans (maybe under the influence of alcohol, or maybe not), began to sing the infamous “Build that wall” chant louder and louder,” said a tourist named Anaximandro Amable to The Yucatan Times.
According to the paper, this is one of many instances where Americans have been expressing pro-Trump views on immigration while visiting Mexico.
“This is just one of the many blameworthy behaviors that young spring breakers have shown recently in Cancun and that are described as acts of xenophobia and discrimination against Mexicans within their own country,” The Yucatan Times wrote in their editorial.
In fairness, it was probably just a bunch of drunk college students acting out. If Mexican papers want to start having a conversation about respect, they might want to start by asking their people to stop raising Mexico’s flag above America’s at high schools, waving the flag at college graduations, and chanting “Osama, Osama” when Mexico beats America in soccer.
