IRS apologizes for targeting conservative groups

POLITICO — A top Internal Revenue Service official apologized Friday to conservative political groups for giving their tax documents extra scrutiny.


Lois Lerner, who is responsible for overseeing tax-exempt groups, said the agency singled out groups who used words like “tea party” or “patriot” in their tax documents, the AP reported.

The practice, Lerner said, was initiated by low-level employees at the agency.
