DNC Chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz had a few facts wrong when she appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” with Candy Crowley Sunday to brag about how the Democratic Party has all of its assets working in the June 5 Wisconsin recall race.
“Well, I am going there Tuesday to campaign with Mayor[Tom] Barrett. I think he has a real opportunity to win,” Wasserman Schultz said. “We have put our considerable grassroots resources behind him. All of the Obama for America and state party resources, our grassroots network.
“I think what’s going to happen is because of our on the ground operation we have had an opportunity in this election, especially given that Wisconsin’s a battleground state, just like we did in the recall elections a year ago, to give this a test run, and so what I think the implications will be is that ultimately I think Tom Barrett will pull this out.”
As recently as May 15, liberal MSNBC talking head Ed Schultz lambasted the Democratic National Committee for refusing to contribute $500,000 to the Wisconsin State Democratic Party for a get out the vote effort.
“I have a question for our friends at the DNC, what the hell are you waiting for?” Ed Schultz asked, at the same time lambasting his party for its incompetent get out the vote effort, noting that time has been wasting away.
But beyond the spin of a united Democratic Party, the reality for Democrats is even more grim, considering that the public-sector unions that triggered the recall election have found themselves being asked to back an anti-union Democratic candidate.
In fact, Barrett supported many of the same anti-union policies that incumbent Republican Gov. Scott Walker has endorsed.
And as of last week, Republican-leaning interests had outraised Barrett by a 25-to-1 margin.
The Republican National Committee, by contrast, has poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into defeating the recall.
“We’re all in here,” RNC Chairman Reince Priebus told Politico earlier this month. “We will be involved for as much as we need to be involved. We haven’t put a limit on the number.”
