National parks are free for all people to roam and become one with nature if they so choose. Well, social justice warriors and liberals are angry because too many white people want to roam the outdoors.
Joe Jackson wrote in Outside Magazine on January 20th that outdoor activities had “too many white dudes.”
After attending a biannual industry trade show Outdoor Retailer in Salt Lake City, Jackson was astounded that everyone there looked like him. Maybe had they held the convention in Chicago or Mississippi, it may have looked demographically different than Utah, which is nearly 90 percent white.
He spoke to five journalists, activists, and businessmen in the outdoor industry who have made it their duty to expose more minorities and women to the outdoors with the hopes they’ll make it a hobby.
“There are a lot of people talking about diversifying the outdoor industry, engaging underrepresented communities in the outdoors, and outdoor recreation activities,” said Bryan Martin, the Executive Director of Big City Mountaineers. “We at Big City Mountaineers scratch our heads and say, ‘We’ve been doing this since 1990.’ It’s obviously welcome news for us, but we have it baked into our DNA that this is who we are and what we do.”
Obviously, Martin’s company isn’t very efficient at their job if they’ve been trying to diversify the outdoors for 27 years, and it’s still white as snow.
It could just be possible that some culturally different groups of people find some hobbies more interesting than others? Why are there more Latino soccer players and more white hockey players?
Even the outdoors which has no cost and is open to all, faces a diversity problem — because everything in liberal ideology boils down to race.
