Rep. Joe Garcia (D-Fla.) of wax-eating fame is back in the news this week for claiming that the influx of government workers along the country’s southern border is proof that “Communism works.”
Garcia appeared to be praising Communism during a Google Hangout about immigration reform last week, a video of the congressman’s remarks shows.
The Florida Democrat told supporters:
“When you attract people, you are the dominant culture that people want to emulate and copy what you’re doing because it works. And in America, we are doing a huge disservice to ourselves by not understanding how powerful of a driver in the economy an immigration system that works can be — and continues to be — and by not having an immigration system that works. Let me give you an example, the kind of money we’ve poured in: So the most dangerous — sorry, the safest city in America is El Paso, Texas. It happens to be across the border from the most dangerous city in the Americas, which is Juarez. Right? And two of the safest cities in America, two of them are on the border with Mexico. And of course, the reason is we’ve proved that Communism works. If you give everybody a good, government job, there’s no crime. But that isn’t what we should be doing on the border. The kind of money we’ve poured into it, and we’re having diminishing returns.”
Garcia appeared to be mocking Republicans for creating government jobs through enhanced border security.
The Democrat, who is Cuban, told The Miami Herald the idea of someone of his heritage praising Communism is absurd.
“This is an absurdity, accusing the son of Cuban immigrants of believing in Communism is just ridiculous,” he said.
Though the Miami Herald asked Garcia if, perhaps, he should have used better wording, he admitted it wouldn’t have mattered.
“They would post the video anyway … I’ll continue to say it,” Garcia said.
Garcia is currently up for re-election in Florida’s 26th Congressional District. The incumbent congressman’s seat is viewed as vulnerable by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and the race is rated a toss-up.
