Teen years are no walk in the park. There’s almost no sense of perspective — a bad haircut or too much acne seems like the end of the world. Add the pressure of political correctness and vigilante social justice warriors and the combination could be deadly.
Phoebe Connop, a 16-year-old gymnast from the UK, found the fear of being labeled a racist too unbearable and committed suicide, the Telegraph reported.
The gymnast sent her friends a private Instagram picture of herself dressed with a scarf on her head and a filter that darkened her skin tone.
Connop had been secretly talking to a Muslim man and said in the message that his parents’ would disapprove of them dating unless she looked like she appeared in the message.
Her friends, being teenagers, shared the message with other people and the image began spreading around her community. She feared that people would start labeling her a racist and hung herself in her parent’s home on July 7.
“From speaking to her friends in the weeks following her death, we discovered that the image had circulated further than she wanted it to,” said Detective Sergeant Katherine Tomkins, from West Midlands Police.
Social justice warriors have raised the stakes so high that a girl would rather end her life than deal with the wrath of being labeled with the scarlet “R,” all because she tried to tell a joke.
