They are the careers that won’t die. In nearly every case, that’s not a good thing. Among the dubious returns that are expected over the coming months, here’s what we’re most skeptical of:
5. Brett Favre » His last two seasons have ended with interceptions. He’s missed more of training camp this summer than Albert Haynesworth. There’s no way this ends well for the Minnesota Vikings, unless they get a new stadium.

4. Tracy McGrady » A question: Which small forward earned more than $22 million while playing just 30 games last season, has ball-hogging tendencies, bum knees and a 31-year-old frame? No wonder the Detroit Pistons were taking the weekend to think about it.
3. David Beckham » He showed up from Italy late last summer and helped the Galaxy go all the way to the MLS Cup final. Becks said on Saturday that he could return from a ruptured Achilles in October. Instead of promoting soccer, that’ll be two years a row that he freelances his way into the playoffs.
2. Shaquille O’Neal » Phoenix was 61-21 in 2006-07. In the next two seasons with Shaq, the Suns were 55-27 and then 46-36. The Cleveland Cavaliers were 66-16 in 2008-09. With Shaq last season, they were 61-21. Even if Boston got him for just $3 million, the best thing the Celtics can do with O’Neal is leave him on the bench.
1. Isiah Thomas » Besides the fact that the only value Thomas could possibly bring to the New York Knicks at this point is either tragic or comic, the NCAA is certain to give itself major legal headaches down the road by approving this consultant thing.
