One of the Washington press corps’ most familiar faces bade farewell to Washington last week, as Gannett News Service’s Bill Ringle, still freelancing at 85, moved to Davidson, N.C.

A member of the exclusive Gridiron Club, Ringle covered New York politics in Albany, where he worked with the late R.W. “Johnny” Apple of The New York Times before coming to D.C.

Growing tired of hearing reporters talk about the flamboyant Apple’s latest exploit, Ringle instituted a rule that whenever Apple’s name was mentioned, the offending reporter had to contribute a dollar to a fund, which was used to finance an anti-Apple party.
