For Wildcats, Crimson, it’s academic

Their schools are well-known for courses other than history. Or perhaps for more than just history. But that’s the topic that matters most this week. Both Northwestern and Harvard have a chance to end an ugly basketball past this week.

Northwestern has never made the NCAA tournament. Harvard last made it in 1946.

Both schools need a little help.

The Wildcats (18-12) have just one win over a team with a top-50 RPI ranking and lost an opportunity to help themselves with close home losses to Michigan and Ohio State last week. But a win or two in the Big Ten tournament this week could solidify their chances.

Meanwhile, it’s easy for Harvard, which is tied with Penn for first place. There’s no Ivy League tournament, so if Penn loses at Princeton on Tuesday, then Harvard gets the automatic bid. If Penn wins, then there will be a one-game playoff to determine the winner. And perhaps give Harvard something to brag about other than alum Jeremy Lin.
