As a player, former Dunbar standout Keith Booth re-established the pipeline between the Maryland men?s basketball team and Baltimore City. Now as an assistant coach, he has opened the floodgates.

St. Frances rising senior Sean Mosley became the latest Baltimore prep basketball player to opt for Maryland, as the 6-foot-4 guard verbally committed to coach Gary Williams? program during a media conference Wednesday at the high school.

Mosley said he chose Maryland over Syracuse and several other major, Division I programs largely due to Booth?s regular appearances at his games and through his commitment during the recruiting process.

“We had a great relationship and that?s the basic thing I was looking for in the recruiting process,” said Mosley of Booth, who played at Maryland from 1993-97. “He stuck with me from day one and continued to be there for me.”

Mosley, an All-Examiner First Team member last winter, developed into one of the top players in the Baltimore Catholic League last season, when he averaged 21 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. He will join fellow BCL players and current Maryland freshmen center Braxton Dupree (Calvert Hall) and forward Dino Gregory (Mount St. Joseph) at College Park for the 2008-09 season.

Mosley can change his mind until he signs his NCAA letter of intent, which officially binds him to a school, as early as Nov. 14.

St. Frances coach William Wells said Mosley is a very versatile player, as he can play with his back to the basket, shoot three-pointers and play stifling defense. Wells said Mosley is best player to come out of St. Frances since Mark Karcher left for Temple a decade ago.

“I want Sean to be the coach on the floor this season and a leader off of it as well,” Wells said. “Sean took everything in stride and things worked out for him and [Booth], who showed Maryland had great interest in him.”

Mosley, who announced his decision on his mother, Tara?s, birthday, said he is glad to finally make a decision, ending the incessant phone calls and letters he?s received the past few years. He said he is looking forward to challenging Maryland?s incumbent guards, Eric Hayes and Greivis Vasquez, for playing time when he arrives on campus.
