Redskins news and notes

…Just to show you how crazy the Mike Shanahan rumors will be, Fox 5 reported earlier today that the ex-Denver coach was at Redskins Park. It was shot down rather quickly and they retracted the report. But one rumor after another will be flying about Shanahan. He still belongs at the top of the Redskins list of coaches to replace Jim Zorn, who will be fired at season’s end.

And are they in talks with him? Why wouldn’t they be? They’ve likely been talking to him all season; according to numerous sources and various reports, he’d already turned them down twice during the season. At this point, it would be a mild upset if it’s not Shanahan.

…I’d say that this has turned into a bizarre situation, with Zorn being asked about his job situation amid the Shanahan reports. But not sure this particular part of the season is stranger than the end of Marty Schottenheimer’s era, when we hung out at Redskins Park simply to walk with him for about 40 feet from the front of the entrance to his car. All to get an update on his job status, with reports and rumors about Steve Spurrier circulating. A bad way to go (unless you count the millions he walked away with). The other thing I found funny about the end of Marty’s reign was the few coaches who told us, “Wait until this is all over and I’ll tell you everything.” When it ended, they said nothing.

…With a snowstorm expected Saturday, the Redskins likely will be forced to alter their practice schedule. They tend to change practice times quite often with the threat of rain, so they could end up having a walk-through indoors. Not sure they could get much accomplished outdoors if we get as much snow as we’re expecting.

…Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth sounds like he’ll probably play Monday night after missing the past game with an ankle injury. Corner DeAngelo Hall (knee), fullback Mike Sellers (thigh), S Kareem Moore (ankle), DT Cornelius Griffin (shoulder) were limited. Hall is a game-time decision; the others may be as well.

Meanwhile, right tackle Stephon Heyer (knee) did not practice again and there’s a good chance he’ll be replaced by Will Robinson in the starting lineup. To face Justin Tuck. He has not posted big sack numbers this year because of the double teams he faces, but he’s still a good player. Robinson would be making his NFL debut.

…Heyer has struggled often this season, but he has played a long time on a bad knee.
