Collinsworth embraces Madden’s legacy

In a refreshing turn, one television personality wants to go out of his way to make sure his own ego doesn’t get in the way.

During a conference call Wednesday, Cris Collinsworth said that during a trip this summer to the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, his wife helped put perspective on inheriting the legacy of now-retired John Madden this season on NBC Sunday Night Football.

“She said, ‘They should put the John Madden bus in here,'” said Collinsworth. “They should. When it was around, man, people couldn’t wait to touch it and be a part of it.”

Collinsworth deserves his new role as the premier broadcast analyst in the NFL, but a part of his new responsibility is to understand his place in something larger than himself. He plans to bring up Madden during games because he knows he should.

“The people that I talk with around the country — and now I’m sort of a part of this — they just want me to tell John, ‘Thanks,'” said Collinsworth. “They want me to say how much they appreciate what he meant to them and what he meant to their lives.”
