Free agents still looking for homes

Pitchers and catchers are reporting and position players are on the way. But not everyone has a home yet. These are four intriguing free agents:

OF Scott Podsednik » Whoever eventually signs him will have a potential speedy leadoff hitter capable of batting around .300 and stealing a few bases. Last year he stole 35 combined with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Kansas City Royals. But his defense is in decline and he offers no power. Still, at worst, he’s a No. 4 outfielder and probably a good bargain.

1B Russell Branyan » He’s a strikeout machine and he’ll never hit for a high average. But he’s also hit 56 homers combined the past two seasons. For an American League club, he could also DH. For a National League club, he’d be good power off the bench.

P Jeremy Bonderman » There’s good and bad with him. He’s only 28 and offers a lot of experience with a 67-77 record and career 4.89 ERA. But two years of shoulder injuries caused an up-and-down 2010. He had a solid start last year (4.20 ERA in the first half) before fading (6.72 in the second half). Was that a function of arm weariness coming back from injury?

OF Jose Guillen » The ex-National still has value, though it didn’t show after he was traded to San Francisco last season. He’s a potential headcase and his influence on young players isn’t the best. Oh, and he batted .183 in his final 30 games with Kansas City last year before the trade. Why is he intriguing? In his last three full seasons he’s hit 28, 42 and 22 homers respectively.
